"Lake
where the deer shed horns"
is the literal translation of
the name Lochabar. Here can be found wolf dens 40 feet in
diameter and 80 feet deep, with perpendicular walls and
subterranean streams and caverns. The Giant's Pool, with its
vertical walls of limestone and a depth of 300 feet, over which
one has to leap at a single bound, is not to be found elsewhere.
|
| The
original track was 1500 acres of land which in 1700, was sold to
William Penn by the chief of the Susquehanna or Andastes Indians
for " a parcel of English goods." It is said that a
sad Chief Wi-Daadh died of a broken heart when he realized he
had sold his treasured land for a few worldly goods. |
| Lochabar
is to the ancient Susquehannocks what Jerusalem is to the
Christians, Moslems and Jewish faiths. It was the center of
their spiritual monotheistic religion. It was the residence of
Wi-Daadh, the light of his people. The wolf den caves were the
underground temples and cathedrals where the spiritual leaders
and their students made contact with the spirit world. |
| Located
here also is a spring that begins the Antes Creek and flows
about three miles to the Susquehanna River. |
| Here one
finds a great stone column that marks the grave site of Chief
Wi-Daagh. The Ionic colimn was removed from the fire-ravaged
captial building in Harrisburg and brought to Lochabar by
Colonel Sanderson in 1900. It is 45 feet high and weights 41
tons. (Colonel Sanderson is the great grandson of indian scout
Robert Covenhoven.) |
| At the
entrance of Brandon Park (Williamsport, PA.) there is a monument
for Woapalanne (Bald Eagle). A Munsee chief that many areas
carry his name; Bald Eagle's Nest (now Milesburg), Bald Eagles
Creek, Bald Eagle Mountains, Bald Eagle Township (Clinton
County). |
| During the
Revolutionary War he lead war parties from "the Nest"
against settlements in the West Branch Valley. He was to have
killed James Brady near Williamsport in 1778, and was killed in
June, 1779 by James' elder brother Sam near Brandy's Bend
(Clarion County). |
